Four goals. That is how close Saint Lucia came to a place at the 2027 Netball World Cup. The Piton Sparks closed their campaign at the Americas Qualifier in Barbados on Monday evening with an overtime defeat by St Vincent & the Grenadines, finishing sixth in the eight-team table. As reported by St. Lucia Times, the scores were locked at 45 when the final buzzer sounded in Wildey, and the Vincy Jewels edged the extra period 55-53.

The tournament at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex decided the Americas region's two tickets to Sydney 2027. Trinidad & Tobago went unbeaten to claim the title; runners-up SVG took the second. Saint Lucia finished with two wins and five losses and six competition points, but the raw numbers tell a narrower story.

The Sparks outscored their opponents across the week, scoring 312 goals and conceding 283, the fourth-fewest in the tournament, for a goal difference of plus-29. Only Trinidad & Tobago, SVG, the United States and hosts Barbados finished with better margins. Saint Lucia were, by that measure, a top-four side who paid for a slow start and cruel luck with injuries.

Both blows landed early. Teenage shooter Neriah Charlery was lost before the tournament began, prompting Shem Maxwell to come out of retirement. Then Maxwell herself went down in the final quarter of the game against Barbados, just as Saint Lucia, who had led 22-18 at halftime and through three quarters, were closing in on a win over the hosts. The Bajans rallied to take it 42-40.

The opening fixture had already hurt. Canada beat the Sparks 34-25 in game one, and that slow start proved decisive in the end. Saint Lucia's best work followed: a 75-11 rout of the British Virgin Islands, in which the BVI were held to single digits through three periods, then a 50-29 win over Grenada after the rest day. Defeats by Trinidad & Tobago, 62-35, and the United States, 50-34, followed before the final-day loss to SVG, a game Saint Lucia led by one in the last quarter before the overtime defeat. Canada's 42-40 win over Grenada that same day nudged them to nine points and above Saint Lucia in the table.

The shooting, at least, was dependable. Dasha Eugene led the side with 141 goals from 187 attempts, a 75 per cent return, and Naija Ferdinand converted 137 of 174, a 79 per cent mark. Ferdinand sank 32 in the finale against SVG, with Maxwell adding 30 from 38.

Netball sits alongside football at the heart of everyday sport in Saint Lucia, and the national side's showing in Barbados was followed closely back home. For visitors who follow the island, that local sporting life is part of the appeal. Fixtures are often flagged on hotel noticeboards, and many travellers book holidays to St Lucia around more than the beach, timing trips to catch a community match or a national fixture. The island's hotels in St Lucia range from small guesthouses to resort strips, and staff are usually well placed to point guests to whatever is being played nearby.

Where you stay shapes what you see. Families at all-inclusive resorts in St Lucia in the Rodney Bay area can reach evening fixtures around Gros Islet with ease, while guests at luxury hotels in St Lucia on the west coast may find village netball closer to expectations of quiet than of sport. Those renting villas in St Lucia around Cap Estate often make the short trip to community grounds. For visitors, the best time to visit St Lucia may well coincide with a local fixture, and staff at hotels and guesthouses can usually point the way. Direct flights to St Lucia from London and seasonal services from North America make the island straightforward to reach.

For Saint Lucia's netballers, the road now runs towards the next cycle. Trinidad & Tobago and SVG will represent the Americas in Sydney in 2027; Saint Lucia, fourth in goal difference and four goals from the top four, will have to rebuild around a young squad and, in Dasha Eugene and Naija Ferdinand, two shooters who proved they belong at this level.
