A team of three will fly the flag for Saint Lucia at the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, which run from 31 October to 13 November. The Saint Lucia Olympic Committee is sending two swimmers and one track athlete, with the island chasing only its second ever medal at youth Olympic level.
As reported by St. Lucia Times, Noah Dorville will swim the men's 100m and 50m freestyle at the Dakar Tour de l'Oeuf venue, while Fayth Jeffrey, a student-athlete at the Bolles School, contests the women's 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke. Kadan Sam is the only athletics representative and will run the men's 400m at Stade Iba Mar Diop.
Behind the athletes, the delegation is rounded out by coaches Brian Charles, working with the swimmers, and Makeba Alcide, supporting the athletics programme. Lisa Bertin, a seasoned administrator, takes the role of team leader across the two-week competition.
Saint Lucia's only medal at this level so far belongs to Julien Alfred, who took silver in the women's 100m at the third Youth Games in Buenos Aires before going on to win 100m gold and 200m silver at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Those two senior medals remain the only Olympic medals the island has won. Since the first Youth Games in Singapore in 2010, Saint Lucia has sent 14 young athletes, competing in boxing, aquatics, athletics, sailing and beach volleyball.
The Dakar edition will look different from its predecessors. The International Olympic Committee has capped the field at 2,700 athletes, a reduction of roughly 32 per cent from the more than 4,000 who competed in Buenos Aires in 2018, with places allocated by event under a strict quota system. Athletes aged 15 to 17 qualify within those allocations.
Senegal's staging of the Games is itself a milestone, marking the first time an African country has been given an Olympic event to host. The country was originally due to welcome the Youth Games in 2022, but the pandemic forced a postponement. Two winter editions have taken place since the Buenos Aires summer Games.
For followers of sport in Saint Lucia, the small delegation is familiar territory. The island's senior Olympic teams are routinely modest in number, usually between two and six athletes, since the national Olympic committee was formed in 1987 and recognised by the IOC in 1993. Saint Lucia first competed at the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996 and has attended every edition since, though a Youth Games medal remains a rare prize.
Sam's selection continues a strong recent thread in the island's middle-distance running, while the aquatics pairing shows the sport growing beyond athletics as the traditional strength. Athletics has delivered the island's greatest moments, from Alfred's junior silver at the 2018 Youth Games through to her Commonwealth Youth Games 100m title in 2017 and her historic Paris double.
There is a visitor angle too. Youngsters representing the island on this stage tend to spark interest among families following the team, and family holidays in St Lucia often combine beach time with a look at the facilities that produced these athletes. The Daren Sammy stadium in Gros Islet, better known for cricket, sits alongside the aquatic and track venues where local talent trains year round.
Visitors drawn by the sport often extend their stay to explore the island beyond the track. The beaches in St Lucia around Rodney Bay and the west coast give way to rainforest trails, and hiking in St Lucia on the Tet Paul nature trail or the Gros Piton route offers views over Soufrière. Among the things to do in St Lucia, a boat trip beneath the Pitons remains the classic half-day out.
Timing matters for anyone planning a trip around the Games window. The best time to visit St Lucia generally runs from December to April, so the Dakar competition falls just before the busiest stretch of the season, when direct flights to St Lucia from the UK are at their most frequent.
Attention will now turn to how the three youngsters fare in Dakar. A podium finish would give Saint Lucia its second Youth Games medal and, given the path Alfred took from Buenos Aires silver to Olympic gold in Paris, offer a hint of what may follow at Los Angeles 2028.
