Water customers in Saint Lucia no longer need to queue at a counter to settle their bills. The Water and Sewerage Company, known across the island as WASCO, has officially launched an online payment system that runs around the clock, allowing account holders to pay, check what they owe and download both current and earlier bills from a single portal.

As reported by St. Lucia Times, the service went live on Wednesday, and the company's chief executive, Zilta George-Leslie, presented it at a press conference as part of a wider push to modernise how customers deal with the utility. 'Your account will be updated immediately after your payment is made,' she said, adding that the portal gives people access to their accounts at any hour without standing in line.

Registration is done through the company's website, using the account number printed on a previous bill. Once signed up, customers can manage their account, view billing history and settle payments in one place. George-Leslie said the platform was designed with security as a priority, describing it as a secure channel built to international standards so that payments happen in a protected environment.

WASCO's information technology manager, Gregory Tench, moved to reassure customers about their details. Personal data and payment information, he said, are fully protected. He also confirmed that the digital bill viewing service and the balance enquiry line come at no extra charge to any WASCO account holder.

The move fits a broader pattern of life moving online on the island. The 2022 census recorded how connected Saint Lucia has become, with broadband subscriptions now widespread, and younger Saint Lucians in particular treat the internet as their first stop for news and services. Facebook and WhatsApp carry much of the day-to-day information about roads, weather and announcements, and a utility that can be managed from a phone fits neatly into that habit.

For the utility itself, the portal is a step in the company's stated effort to expand its digital services and lighten the load on its branches. For households and businesses across the island, from Castries shops to guesthouses and villas in St Lucia that must keep their water accounts current while hosting guests, it removes a familiar errand and the queue that came with it.

The change also touches the visitor economy, which sits at the centre of the economy of Saint Lucia. Water supply matters directly to the hotels in St Lucia and to the many small properties and restaurants that depend on a reliable service, and easier account management is a small but practical improvement for the operators behind them.

Visitors are unlikely to notice the portal themselves, since settling a water bill is not among the things to do in St Lucia. But its effects reach them indirectly. Operators of all-inclusive resorts in St Lucia, boutique hotels in St Lucia and the dive shops that take guests diving in St Lucia all rely on WASCO's service, and any streamlining of how the utility handles its customers helps the businesses that look after travellers.

It also matters to the growing number of overseas owners who keep a foothold on the island. Anyone who owns property in St Lucia but spends much of the year abroad can now keep their water account up to date remotely, rather than relying on someone on the island to pay in person on their behalf. For seasonal visitors who arrange long stays, whether scouting the best time to visit St Lucia for a return trip or booking holidays to St Lucia through an owner's villa, that continuity of service matters more than it might appear.

The launch is part of a wider digital shift among the island's institutions, which have moved to meet customers where they already are. With Saint Lucians increasingly accustomed to handling errands online, from banking to news, WASCO's portal brings the water utility into line with expectations that would be familiar to anyone who has made digital services a routine part of daily life.

For now, the company's message to customers is simple: register with the account number from an old bill, and the full service, payments, balances and billing history, is available immediately. No further rollout phases or dates were announced, so customers should expect the portal as launched to be the finished service.

The company has not said what digital step, if any, comes next. But with the portal live and accounts updating in real time, WASCO's customers on the island, and the businesses that serve its visitors, now have one less reason to queue.
